Preston vs Arsenal
FA Cup – Third Round.
Date: Saturday, 7th January 2017,
Kick-off at 17:30 UK.
Venue: Deepdale Stadium, Preston.
The Championship outfit Preston North End welcome Premier League giants Arsenal for the FA Cup third round fixture on Saturday evening, 7th January 2017.
Preston were knocked out of the third round of FA Cup last season by a lower league side Peterborough. However, they were successful in negotiating the third round in the previous two seasons.
But they find little success against Premier League sides in recent seasons. The lost on each of the three occasions they were drawn against an EPL club, the latest in 2014/15 against Manchester United. And the previous two against Chelsea in 2008/09 and Liverpool in 2009/10.
Arsene Wenger has already indicated that he will be resting his key players for this FA Cup tie. So Preston has a chance to mount an upset and Wenger will not mind losing this tie and his players has already bought the excuse of congested fixture schedule as the core reason for the team’s under performances every year.
Preston vs Arsenal: Head-to-head stats
Arsenal and Preston had met on two occasions in recent history and both meetings came in the calendar year 1999 in cup matches. Arsenal were winners in those games, a 4-1 win at Preston in the EFL Cup on January followed by 2-1 win at Highbury in the FA Cup in October.
The teams had met 77 times before the 1960s and Arsenal lead the head-to-head stats with 32 wins against Preston’s 26, while 19 matches end in draws.
Preston vs Arsenal: Prediction
Preston have done relatively well in home games this season, while Arsenal are going through a deep slump in form at the moment. On top of that we can expect a young Gunners’ side to take the field at Deepdale on Saturday evening. And many of them will be keen to impress the manager for a place in the first team.
Preston are in no sorts of pressure coming into this tie. But they have a history of failure against Premier League sides in the past few cup games. So, it will be beneficial to back Arsenal to win this tie.
